Nationally-Acclaimed Journalist Colman McCarthy
to Speak at World Peace Day Event
Colman McCarthy, noted author, teacher, lecturer, and former syndicated columnist for The Washington Post, will be the keynote speaker at the 15th annual World Peace Day Celebration to be held Thursday, January 1, 2004, at the Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 E. Dearborn Street, in Englewood. His subject will be "Teach Peace; Reach Peace."
Mr. McCarthy, who has appeared on Crossfire, The Larry King Show, C-Span, The Today Show and many others, founded the Center for Teaching Peace and currently inspires students at Georgetown University, the University of Maryland, American University, and several high schools in the Washington, D.C. area. Featured on the cover of Teacher Magazine (October, 2003), Mr. McCarthy has committed his lifetime to using "whatever skills I have to ease suffering in the world."

Other speakers at the Peace Day Celebration will include Tobi Willcher, Reverend Arthur Lee, and Ruta Jouniari, each advocating for cooperation and understanding among the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths. Peace witness, Faith Fippinger, will also share some of her recent experiences in Iraq, and Reverend Charles McKenzie will provide closing words and a benediction.
The program will begin with music and song at 10:30 a.m, followed by the speakers' presentations between 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Afterwards, Colman McCarthy will lead a workshop on "Teaching Non-Violence" for educators and other interested persons between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
This World Peace Day event is sponsored by the Southwest Florida Peace Coalition, (www.swfpc.com), a consortium of thirteen area organizations, including Venice Peace Coalition, Sierra Club and Pax Christi Manasota.
