MEMORIAL DAY 2004—ARLINGTON SOUTH
This year Memorial Day takes on an especially painful meaning as the violence and bloodshed in Iraq continues, claiming the lives of increasing numbers of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. May 31, 2004—Memorial Day—Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Pax Christi Naples and other volunteers will respectfully remember and mourn the 800+ American soldiers and 10,000 Iraqi civilians who have died in the war on Iraq and the chaos that has followed. Beginning at 7:00 am, volunteers will form a field of 800+ white crosses in the sand, each bearing the name and age of a fallen soldier. At 6:00 PM we will read out the service sheet and begin a solemn reading of the names of the fallen soldiers. We'll begin and conclude the roll-call of U.S. dead with taps, played on a bugle. Our aim is to commemorate the Iraqi war dead and make visible the human cost this war. Our hope is that everyone—whether they approve of this war or not—will join us in remembering these men and women who have been killed in our name. REMEMBERING LIVES LOST IN IRAQ MONDAY, MAY 31, Set-up 7:00 AM, Service 6:00 PM On the Beach, next to the Naples Fishing Pier
