Naples residents participate in World Day Against the Death Penalty
Standing up against the culture of violence and asking our nation to adopt alternatives to the death penalty

Anti-death penalty groups around the world are organizing for Friday, October 10, in celebration of the World Day Against the Death Penalty. For a list of events scheduled across five continents, as well as background information, see http://www.worldcoalition.org/bcoaljm11.html

Pax Christi Naples, a local branch of the Catholic peace movement, invites residents to join them in a vigil at 4:30-6:00 pm in front of the Collier government center, October 10, World Day Against the Death Penalty.

“The United States is a world leader—in executions. And Florida executes more people and has more prisoners on death row than any other state except Texas,” says Karen Dwyer, head of Pax Christi Naples. “We’re inviting everyone to stand with us in a public witness for peace that affirms the sacredness of human life and rejects capital punishment as both cruel and unnecessary.”

The group plans to hold signs and candles, forming a human wall of opposition against the death penalty. Street theater, props, and music are welcome. Sign slogans include:

“Its worth emphasizing,” says Karen Dwyer, “that we have the deepest sympathy for the victims of violent crime and their families. However, the death penalty only serves to create more victims and perpetuates a cycle of violence. If we truly believe that killing is wrong, we must abolish the death penalty.”
