SEPTEMBER 27, SATURDAY — RAISE YOUR VOICE FOR IMMIGRANT RIGHTS:
IMMIGRANT WORKERS FREEDOM RIDE RALLY
12:00-2:00 pm, Coalition Office Bldg (corner of 3rd and Main, Immokalee)
Join us as we join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for a short walking tour of Immokalee, free Mexican food, lively Haitian music, farmworker speeches, and a major rally for the first stop on the IMMIGRANT WORKERS FREEDOM RIDE! Please RSVP to workers@ciw-online.org if you can join the hundreds of farmworkers and allies who will be gathered that day (they need a head-count for lunch). Background:
Inspired by the Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement, immigrant workers and their allies will set out from 9 major U.S. cities, including Miami, and cross the country in buses in late September. They will converge on Washington, D.C., where they will meet with members of Congress on Oct. 1st and 2nd. The Freedom Ride aims to focus public attention on immigrant rights and the injustices of current immigration policies. Immigrant workers, living and paying taxes in the U.S., want the right to apply for citizenship, to reunify their families, and to have a voice on the job without regard to legal status...rights denied by their undocumented status and outdated laws. The road to citizenship needs a new map and the goal of the Freedom Ride is to help draw that map! For more information on the Freedom Ride, please visit their national website at http://www.iwfr.org.
