Some administrators and some parents are using the kids to anger the teachers.
With the self-proclaimed privilege of removing kids from academic classes at their whim, these anti-teacher folks are telling students to ignore their teachers, that teachers don't know what they're talking about, that students themselves and their teachers should not express their ill-informed opinions in public, in letters to the editor, in blogs that respond to articles such as this. Nobody should speak of the issues of salary and schedule during classes?
The move is to crush those who voice condemnation for the injustice of arbitrarily foisting a new superintendent on the community who "doesn't like block schedule," who thinks "teachers don't deserve all that preparation time," who believes that every school should be like every other, who wants uniformity in classroom curriculum and instruction, and who wants to balance the projected budget by taking money out of teachers' and support personnel's pockets.
Will Dr. Thompson be able to dispose of enough teachers at the top of the ladder? Will the high school schedule be altered to give every teacher more students, less preparation time, and crush the Advanced Placement program into a single course again? Will all our Gifted Counselors be moved into regular teaching positions? Will our "fluff" programs in the arts be eliminated? Will student uniforms be mandatory in every school?
Will they be successful in silencing the voices of complaint? Will justice prevail? Or will the fascists rule? What does our community really want?
The people united will never be defeated. The majority can overwhelm even the most powerful factions if they make their will known.
