You folks with high school kids who are outraged by the Work to Rule effects, wait until the new Thompson-I-don't-like-block schedule is sneakily passed into your children's lives. Teachers won't have time to do as much as they're doing now during Work to Rule.
We won't have time for anything except teaching to the tests. Can you imagine what my letters of recommendation to college acceptance boards will look like under the proposed schedule cutback?
This year Suzy Q. read "My Pet Goat" with close attention, kept the book upright while we read it aloud in class, and achieved an A on the tests during and at the end. She was assigned many out of class novels, but I wasn't able to grade her essay responses on them. Nevertheless, I believe she is fully prepared for college level work at a major university. I assigned only the best works. Her FCAT score was 352 and her SAT combined score was only 1200, but these scores are poor indicators of her ability and motivation to succeed. Please consider the limitations imposed on her by CCPS's curriculum and instruction bosses. I believe she has the native ability to compensate for her lack of significant coursework and that, with proper remediation classes, will be a wonderful addition to your Princeton student body, class of 2014.
But who (besides a teacher) cares in this community? All we want is to keep costs down so our taxes stay the same. If it is legal and saves money, the choice is right.
So not only don't give teachers a raise, but also take away their planning time and make them accountable for more students. Be sure to save additional funds by getting rid of the gifted counselors. Those kids they handle are so smart that they don't need special attention. In fact, if we act quickly, we can cancel the senior year altogether and graduate the current juniors with their already earned 24 credits.
If you want to protect your son or daughter's collegiate career, please come to the Regular School Board meeting Thursday, December 13 @ 2 PM.
When you arrive, sign up to speak at the microphone. Plan what you are going to say because the Board will limit you to 2 or 3 minutes. They will also make you wait interminably until the agenda gets to the part where you will be able to address the issues of the high school schedule and the frozen salary. Stay until you have your say. And don't allow the altitude difference between you and the ensconced listeners on high intimidate you.
