We must contradict the incredibly successful propaganda machine that has brainwashed many Americans into thinking: [Afghanis, Iranians, etc.] are all "cold-blooded murderers who would like nothing more than to cold-bloodedly murder these protestors."

A successful protest cannot be declared because of 62 arrests.

To really rally the anti-war movement, military techniques must be imitated by trained demonstrators. For instance, assigned "scouts" could have easily been given "point" duty and have discovered the chain saws, competing demonstrations and construction projects in advance.

Infiltration of competing groups with friendlies, knowing the appropriate time for "attack," and having other goals than getting arrested are essential components. Leaders must contact specific police officers, specific SS officers, specific politicians.

Scouts should arrive at the proposed site with tape measures and ideas about where which groups should present their cases.

Consensus at the last minute with demonstrators shouting out disagreements on basic issues like telling lies vs. speaking the truth are detrimental to success.

I think Ms. Sheehan knows much of this. Authority is anathema to many potential peace protesters; however, deciding on basic movements in advance and telling folks who does what when and where is very important.

I complement those brave spirits who participated in this event. But we need more. Organize by personal contacts, don't depend on general e-mails to "the list."

What is success? We at least got Mr. Obama to pause and consider before subscribing to General Stanley A. McChrystal's demand for more troops.

Eli Saslow's Washington Post October 7 article, For Antiwar Protesters, the Cause Isn't Lost, is too busy denigrating the size of the group that protested in Washington to applaud the success of penetrating Mr. Obama's "bubble."
