It's already 11/3 and no comments on Reverend Hendershot's Sunday article?
Our town has an awful lot of churches. Almost as many as banks. Rev. Hendershot's article needs to be read from every pulpit in Naples. She writes, "None of God’s children deserve to be beaten, chained or refused water while working so that we can have cheap tomatoes at our nearest grocer. It is time for us all to see and respect this invisible class of human beings — farmworkers — created and loved by God."
Impossible to argue with! Publix is the best place to buy just about everything a householder needs. And we have more Publix stores than either churches or banks. We consumers must insist that Publix make a positive difference in the lives of farmworkers that live here among us by buying tomatoes from the right farms.
Alderman Farms, Lady Moon Farms and East Coast Growers — have agreed this coming season to pass along to harvesters an extra penny-per-pound pledged by these companies. These are the companies Publix needs to purchase their tomatoes from.
No more harvests by abused human beings. No more slavery. No excuses. |
